All sorts of coils

Ignition coils from Valeo

Published:  03 December, 2014

The ignition coils programme from Valeo include all configurations i.e. pencil, top plug and rail, as well as most of the second-generation coils, which connect directly to the spark plugs. The range has extended by 83 part numbers in recent months, now standing at 185 references covering 80% of the European car parc. New applications include the Seat Leon and Toledo, Volkswagen Golf IV, V and VI, Vauxhall Astra, Ford Fiesta and Ka as well as several Audi cars including the A1, A3, A5 and Q3.

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation system reduces the nitrogen dioxide from emissions by recirculating part of the exhaust gas back into the cylinders. An efficient EGR system reduces emissions output by as much as 50% but one of the most common causes of system failure is the EGR valve. If the valve is not operating correctly, the exhaust gas cannot be controlled and forms harmful NOx gases and compromises performance and economy, potentially reducing engine life. EGR valves should be checked around 100,000 miles. Six new EGR modules join Valeo's air management system range which comply fully with Euro 5 emission regulations. The OE range of EGR valves have an integrated compact cooler. The modules cover five vehicle manufacturers, resulting in 16 applications including Citroen C4 & C5, Nissan Qashqai and Peugeot 3008 & 5008.

  • Spark plug ignites new Spider

NGK has just won the contract to supply OE spark plugs on the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider which was showcased earlier this year at the Geneva Motor Show and is due to go into production in early 2015. The premium convertible will be powered by Alfa's four-cylinder, all aluminium, 1,742cc turbo petrol engine which takes it from 0 to 62mph in just 4.5 seconds, with a top speed in excess of 155mph. Tim Ward, Deputy General Manager - Sales & Marketing, NGK Spark Plugs (UK) Ltd, said: "The news comes hot on the heels of the announcement that we are OE on the innovative Porsche 918 Spyder hybrid sports car and further demonstrates the technical excellence of our products and the work of our OE team in satisfying the demands of the world's leading vehicle manufacturers." NGK's ILKAR7D6G spark plug for the 4C Spider, was originally developed exclusively for the FIAT Group's high-output direct injection 1,750 TBi engines in 2009. Since then, it has been used in Alfa Romeo vehicles and other brands within the group including the Alfa Romeo 159, Spider, Giulietta and 4C.

  • Cables and coils

Robert Bosch first successfully installed a magneto ignition device into a vehicle back in 1897, solving one of the biggest problems in vehicle construction. Ignition technology has clearly moved on since then, now focussed on improving fuel economy, power and reducing exhaust emissions. Bosch provides ignition components to VMs for use as original equipment and uses the research and development in producing these parts for the aftermarket. Its coils range encompasses traditional asphalt coils for older vehicles and the modern plastic variety in both module and pencil/rod configurations, used in modern engines. The programme includes just under 300 part numbers so can boast being one of the largest coil suppliers from a single source. Bosch's cables range provides over 90% coverage and includes resistive cable sets, copper core sets, pre-assembled resistive as well as copper-core single leads. Its Silicone-Copper ignition cables are said to have outstanding interference suppression and isolation. Silicone-Copper high performance copper-core cables need to be used in vehicles which have them fitted as OE as any other type of replacement could result in malfunctions in other electronic systems.

There are just under 300 part numbers in Bosch's ignition coil programme, encompassing traditional asphalt coils for older vehicles to the modern plastic variety in both module and pencil/rod configurations in newer engines. Its range of ignition cables provides over 90% market coverage and includes hundreds of resistive ignition cable sets, copper core cable sets, pre-assembled resistive single leads as well as pre-assembled copper-core single leads. The Silicone-Power resistance ignition cables were developed for vehicles fitted with resistance cables as OE and feature a long-lasting unbreakable core.

  • Double whammy

ACDelco's spark plugs range is set to double in the coming weeks and includes the array of ignition technologies available, including resistor, non-resistor, nickel and platinum-tipped electrode types. The plugs are designed to provide consistent starts in all weather, smooth engine idle and promote excellent fuel economy. ACDelco's Director, Lee Quinney says: "Once again we have a number of product range extension programmes that we will be introducing in 2014, spark plugs being one of the first."
