IGA welcomes minister’s pledge to review MOT fee

The Independent Garage Association has welcomed confirmation from the Department for Transport that ministers are reviewing the MOT test fee and will consult with stakeholders later this year.

The announcement came several months after the IGA urged independent garage owners and operators to give their views about the future of the MOT price cap, ahead of talks with the government.

Now local transport minister, Lilian Greenwood, has acknowledged the vital role independent garages play in delivering safety-critical MOT testing, the IGA said.

CEO Stuart James said the association was pleased the government is now actively reviewing the MOT fee structure.

“The current system places unsustainable pressure on businesses that are essential to maintaining road safety across the UK,” he said.

James said the review represented a crucial opportunity to secure a fairer, more sustainable framework for MOT testing that reflects the real costs faced by garages.

During the summer, the IAAF issued fresh industry calls for a long-overdue increase in the MOT test fee as part of a new campaign.

The IAAF said it was time to reset the aftermarket’s contract with consumers as part of a push to modernise the MOT and boost support for safety, air quality, rising standards and the right to repair for the independent automotive aftermarket.
