EZ Oil Drain

Published:  18 February, 2020

DK Smith International is introducing its range of EZ Oil Drain Valves to the UK. The company says the design of the drain valves makes them simple to install. The company offer a wide range of thread types, fitting most automotive and industrial engines. The one touch operation, according to DK Smith, reduces the time and cost to carry out oil changes. The EZ Oil Drain Valve permanently replaces the drain plug, eliminating the chance of stripping threads every time an oil change is required. Fitting an optional hose nipple will allows the draining of the oil directly into a secure container, reducing contact with hot oil, reducing mess and reducing the chance of contaminating the environment. The ball valve design provides a seal when closed, for leak proof operation. For automotive and HGV aftermarket customers, DK Smith is now also providing a free dust cap.

Hunter touchless alignment system

Published:  20 December, 2019

The Hunter Quick Check Drive is available exclusively from Pro-Align. It is a ‘drive-thru’ non-contact wheel alignment inspection system, where there is no need to attach sensors or targets, or even for the vehicle to stop. The Quick Check Drive system comprises of two slim profile units, which should be situated in the entrance to a workshop. Each of the units contains 16 lasers which are used to assess the vehicle’s total toe and individual camber measurements, and several cameras which are used to record 40-60 high-definition images of the car, helping to eradicate any fraudulent body damage claims. In order to carry out the alignment assessment, the vehicle needs to be driven between the two measurement units at a speed of between 2-10 mph. Technicians or service advisors then input or confirm the vehicle make and model details, and the system cross-references Hunter’s vehicle database to determine if the vehicle is within the manufacturer’s tolerances, or if a full 14-point alignment assessment is required. The system can take new readings every 3-5 seconds.

Dayco: OE damper pulleys

Dayco has launched a range of OE damper pulleys for the aftermarket
Published:  03 October, 2019

As well as producing engine products and drive systems, Dayco also manufactures OE torsional vibration dampers for a number of VMs worldwide. The company has now made the range available to the aftermarket.
“Modern powerplants are highly engineered to deliver the optimum combination of power and torque, alongside fuel efficiency and minimal exhaust emissions,” says Dayco’s National Sales Manager Steve Carolan. “This objective often comes at the cost of high levels of engine vibration, which is generally intensified by the significant pressures present in the engine’s combustion chambers, an occurrence especially prevalent with diesel units.
“This vibration is transmitted through the crankshaft and therefore has a significant impact on the engine’s power transmission drive systems.”
To reduce this problem, Dayco engineers have developed a range of damper pulleys, with the prefix DPV.
“Generally installed directly to the crankshaft, observes Steve, “the damper reduces the circular vibrations that cause the primary problem, decreasing wear on many of the engine’s components. Naturally, the front end auxiliary drive (FEAD) system is a principal beneficiary, which increases the durability of the entire powerplant, but they also improve comfort for the vehicle’s occupants.”

Three types
There are three types of damper that, depending on the application, are generally installed: The simple, double and decoupler.
“The simple damper is integrated within the FEAD system,” explains Steve. “Its single rubber element provides sufficient vibration reduction for applications with standard noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) requirements.
“The double damper encompasses two rubber elements within its metal parts, which are designed to absorb vibration at different frequencies, and is for use in applications that generate high power and increased vibration, such as modern diesel engines.
“Although the decoupler damper still incorporates a rubber ring, the damping function is carried out through metal springs, as opposed to solely relying on its rubber element. It is used on the latest generation engines with greater power and enables the FEAD system to cope with high mileage and adverse conditions, particularly for applications that feature belt start generator (BSG) function for their Stop/Start systems.”

Damper Replacement
Commenting on replacement, Steve says: “Dampers should be checked for signs of wear, such as abnormal noises, unpleasant vibrations or even steering oscillations, at every 40,000 mile interval or when replacing the auxiliary belt. However, as a matter of course and irrespective of the signs, Dayco suggests they are changed every time the timing belt is renewed.”
“In order to check the damper correctly, it needs to be removed from the engine because the back, as well as the front needs to be examined to fully assess its condition. In addition, whether it needs to be replaced or not, if its fixing bolts are designed to stretch on initial fitment, these must be changed, as they will no longer meet their design tolerances if reused.”
Steve adds: “Dayco DPVs are produced in the same facilities, to identical standards, whether the damper is destined for OE or aftermarket. Each damper in the range that also requires its bolts to be replaced, comes complete with the correct specification bolts.”

Open up and say ‘R-R-R’

Published:  26 September, 2019

Servicesure has teamed up with Yuasa to encourage garages to take battery testing seriously, through the frame of its three ‘R’s of battery health.
Garages that sign up to Servicesure’s Battery Sure programme and become an official Battery Testing Station are taught to advise customers they can ‘Relax’, if their battery is in a good state of health, if they should ‘Recharge’ a low battery, or if it’s time to ‘Replace’.
Each Battery Testing Station will receive a dual-branded battery testing kit, a dual-branded battery stand with header board, testing station signage, ‘Your battery has been checked’ invoice stickers and access to the GS Yuasa Academy.
The GS Yuasa Academy offers over 20 module-based training that teach technicians best practice advice covering every step of a battery’s lifespan. Upon completion, a downloadable certificate is available to print off.
James Douglas, Marketing and Product Manager at GS Yuasa Battery Sales UK Ltd said: “There are huge benefits to all workshops participating in battery testing initiatives such as Servicesure’s ‘Battery Sure’.
“We’ve conducted workshop trials which highlighted that the battery in over one in ten vehicles brought into a workshop requires replacing, and 27% require a recharge. Yet this is rarely checked. Most customers expect their workshops to check and maintain all elements of their vehicle. If the battery fails shortly after a service or repair work, customers may question the quality of the work carried out and the reliability of the workshop. Workshop should be implementing the simple minute long battery test into their everyday routine. A battery may look and perform fine but the test will identify its state of health and if it is likely to fail soon.”
Paul Dineen, Head of Garage Programmes, added: “An initiative like this – one which is backed by a trusted industry name such as Yuasa – will no doubt help to further strengthen the Servicesure network, giving garages the tools required to really make the most of an often unexploited revenue stream.”

Exhaust & emissions: Easy as 1-2-3

Published:  24 September, 2019

ELTA Automotive is recommending garages follow its three-step process to successfully deal with exhaust and emissions control issues.
“In-depth analysis conducted by our TECHASSIST support service indicates that there are two common reasons for returns,” said ELTA Automotive Marketing Manager Tim Brotherton. “The first is misdiagnosis. There are several causes of EGR-related fault codes and not all point directly to the valve itself. The second is technicians replacing EGR valves, but not addressing the underlying issues that caused the valve to fail. Our research shows that EGR valves that have failed prematurely are often heavily contaminated, indicating that they’ve been installed into a ‘dirty’ system.”
ELTA’s three-step process proposes that technicians first clean the system using an EGR/turbo cleaning aerosol system. They should then, replace the EGR valve and lastly reset the ECU so it recognises the new component.
Tim continued: “Other components to check include the air mass sensor – as a faulty sensor may not be measuring the correct air flow rate – the throttle body – because if this is malfunctioning it may result in an insufficient amount of air entering the engine – and the vacuum pump – because pneumatically controlled EGR valves can fail to actuate if it is not operating correctly.
He added: “Using our TECHASSIST technical expertise, we are able to demonstrate that drilling down to find the underlying fault is the key to the correct prognosis and as well as yielding better results, following a structured procedure will improved workshop efficiency by saving time and money.”

Blast it! How to disinfect air con systems

Published:  20 September, 2019

With cars having been using their air con in full during the warmer months, Helen Robinson, Marketing Director at Euro Car Parts, wants to remind garages that cleaning air conditioning systems remains a good opportunity into the autumn and beyond.
“We’ve all done it – you turn on the air con after not using it for a few months, only to be greeted by a terrible smell. The reason behind this, however, is quite simple. Stagnant water droplets trapped in your dormant system are blasted out, leaving behind a foul odour and some nasty bacteria. While this is a common driver complaint, not every garage is taking the opportunity to upsell and provide a thorough cleaning and disinfection service. Fortunately, you can take three essential steps using products from Normfest that have been specifically designed and formulated to help these troubled drivers.
“The first step is to ‘bomb’ the system with Viro Dry Shot Plus, a powerful anti-bacterial cleaning agent. Using the product is simple – spray it directly into the air intake nozzles that are usually located in the passenger footwell. The spray then disperses throughout the air conditioning system for a thorough, quick and hygienic clean. Viro One Shot Plus eliminates microorganisms, prevents allergic reactions and leaves a lasting pleasant smell. A single can is enough for one application.
“In the second step, Viro Air Fresh Plus is sprayed directly into the air vents and gets to work on the air conditioner’s piping. Over time, a layer of dirt collects in the ventilation ducts and becomes a perfect breeding ground for bacteria and mould. Viro Air Fresh Plus eliminates these odour-causing particles with direct application, enabled by the included tube nozzle. It provides a long-lasting disinfection and leaves a pleasant citrus fragrance. One can contains enough spray for three applications.
“For the third and final step don’t forget the evaporator. For a complete clean, it is recommended that garages also use Viro Vaporizer to disinfect the air conditioner’s evaporator. A layer of dirt can accumulate on the evaporator fins over time, which provides ideal conditions for microorganisms to reproduce. The product cleans with high-pressure flushing, acting across the evaporator’s entire surface. It quickly kills bacteria and fungi and prevents their resettlement. The product is supplied with a 60-centimetre long tube with a rotary nozzle, helping the user to reach all corners of the evaporator. Viro Vaporizer contains enough spray for one air conditioning system. This final step completes the process, providing comprehensive protection against bacteria and bad odours.”
In conclusion, Helen added: “Disinfecting a vehicle’s air conditioning is not just about removing bad smells. It is important to periodically remove the build-up of bacteria, dirt and dust within the system to avoid discomfort, allergies and health complications. This simple three-step process could be combined with a re-gas and a new cabin filter for a complete system rejuvenation. It presents a great opportunity for garages to upsell and provides a service that directly benefits customers – solving a common driver complaint.”

Illegal Refrigerants: Why risk it?

Published:  09 August, 2019

Honeywell is urging garages to make sure they don’t source illegal refrigerants when dealing with air con systems this summer.
“Air conditioning is by far the most popular at-cost optional extra for UK car owners and drivers, “said Lee Hermitage, Marketing Director, Honeywell Fluorine Products Europe, Middle East and Africa. “It is not only a comfort perk – it is more often considered a safety feature, too. And rightfully so, since air conditioning can prevent drowsiness and help keep drivers alert. That all is good news for UK garages, because the more air conditioning units are in cars on British roads, the more maintenance they will require. For air conditioning to work, the system has to use a refrigerant and these refrigerants are subject to some pretty tough environmental requirements policed by the Environment Agency to limit emissions from air conditioning units in cars.”
Since January 2017, all new vehicles must be equipped with a low global-warming-potential refrigerant. In most cases this is R-1234yf. However, older vehicles are still equipped with R-134a.
Lee continued: “The first step when servicing car’s air conditioning system, is therefore to understand which refrigerant it contains, since it is illegal to service R-1234yf systems with R-134a.”
It is also essential to check if the product has been legitimately placed on the market: “Counterfeiting or smuggling are not words usually used when talking about refrigeration,” said Lee. “However, they became a reality of the industry lately. In the European Union, illegal products are estimated to make up 20% of the refrigeration market and create 20 million MT of CO2 a year – equivalent to the emissions of four million cars. According to the Environmental Investigation Agency’s study, 72% of users have been offered refrigerant in non-returnable containers, a clear sign of the refrigerant being illegal.
“With illegal products, users do not know what refrigerant really is in the container. Such unknown mixtures can represent a health hazard for technicians working with these refrigerants. An illegal product can also impact the performance of the air-conditioning system, ranging from increasing the fuel consumption to damaging the air-conditioning compressor.
There are consequences: “Being found to be in possession of these illegal products may mean fines are imposed and it may result in custodial sentences. While there is a lot of risk associated with illegal refrigerants, there are steps a business can take to make sure they never use these products.”

DENSO adds reset to e-Videns

Published:  05 August, 2019

DENSO's e-Videns vehicle inspection tool has been enhanced with vehicle reset functionality. The solution now features options for service interval resets and diagnostic trouble code resets.
Gerard Magielsen, DENSO Senior Engineer, commented: “DENSO's e-Videns solution can now perform a service interval reset (SIR) and a diagnostic trouble code reset (DTCR). The SIR can be manual or automatic, depending on the make and model of the vehicle and includes service time and mileage, oil time and mileage, brake and MOT. Diagnostic trouble code reset functionality enables technicians to quickly and easily reset the check engine light, with e-Videns rescanning all vehicle systems to confirm the codes have been reset. Available when the reset license is activated and e-Videns inspection results are saved, a vehicle reset stores all relevant servicing information in the cloud, printing data in both customer and repairer reports. A reset is required on most vehicles following maintenance work.
“DENSO first released e-Videns last year, providing the aftermarket with an end-to-end vehicle health check tool, integrating driver interview, system scanning, health check and a comprehensive vehicle inspection. The tool scans all available vehicle systems for error codes and monitors live engine data under various operating conditions. This information is then compared with reference data within the DENSO cloud to help technicians identify abnormalities and pre-empt potential issues.“
Gerard added: “The ability for e-Videns to trigger a service interval reset and a diagnostic trouble code reset not only gives independent technicians access to technology based on OE products, but will also help them boost efficiency when working with all types of vehicle.”

Textar Cera Tec

Published:  19 July, 2019

Textar Cera Tec is a copper-free brake lubricant. Copper grease cannot withstand high temperatures and stop pads from moving freely within the system. This in turn causes drag and premature wear. It can also react with steel and aluminium, increasing corrosion between these two metals, should contact occur. In addition, as copper is conductive, the presence of the metal in the braking system can interfere with the magnetic sensors found within a car’s ABS and electronics. This could cause the ABS to malfunction, leading to issues with warning lights, or potential wheel locking. The best way to avoid these issues is to ensure that you are using a copper-free grease that complements a vehicle’s brakes, such as Textar’s Cera Tec.

JLM Professional DPF Cleaning Kit

Published:  12 July, 2019

Developed for the trade, the JLM Professional DPF Cleaning Kit enables a workshop to clean and regenerate a blocked filter in less than two hours without removing it from the vehicle. It comprises a toolkit which connects directly to the workshop air supply. A powerful two stage clean and flush fluid pack rapidly breaks up the trapped particulates which prepares the filter to enable full regeneration. This is quicker and more cost effective than removing the DPF for third party offsite cleaning. Minimal fuss and maximum results mean workshops can keep their DPF business in-house.

WPS500X pressure transducer

LIQUI MOLY Cera Tec reduces fuel consumption and makes the engine run smoother. There are oil additives based on a chemical wear protection and oil additives based on physical wear protection. LIQUI MOLY Cera Tec combines both approaches. The minute ceramic particles are a highly effective solid lubricant, tiny enough to easily pass the oil filter and strong enough to protect it effectively. They are more resistant to pressure and high temperatures than PTFE. Cera Tec should be added immediately following an oil change and is effective for 30,000 miles.
