Drivers still putting off vehicle maintenance

Cost is main factor in decision

Published:  28 June, 2014

Drivers are still putting off essential vehicle maintenance, with cost the main reason behind their decisions.

Research by dealer group Evans Halshaw found that 52% of drivers admit to putting off car maintenance, with 62% of these stating that the cost is their primary reason for not scheduling time in the garage. This is a particular issue for older drivers with three quarters of over 65s citing cost as a problem.

The older age group also admitted concerns in finding a trustworthy garage to carry out repairs, although only 22% of respondents in the age bracket said they typically put maintenance off. In contrast, young drivers are the most likely to put it off, with 68% of 18 to 24-year-olds and 69% of 25 to 34-year-olds saying so. In terms of trust, it was an issue with 34% of all those surveyed

Other issues included finding time to get to a garage and needing a car to use while their vehicle is in the workshop.
