Auto Windscreens MD backs ADAS checks in MOTs

Auto Windscreens has called for checks on ADAS systems to be included in MOT tests.
MD James MacBeth, responding to recent European Commission proposals to overhaul EU road safety regulations, welcomed calls to introduce ‘periodic technical inspections’ for advanced driver assistance systems like the UK’s MOT.
MacBeth said: “It’s about time checks on ADAS systems were added to MOTs. In the EU, but not yet in the UK, it’s mandatory for all new cars to be equipped with a range of these features, so we’re seeing the number of cars with this technology on the UK’s roads increasing at a tremendous rate.
“Not enough drivers know that if they have specific repairs on their vehicle or a windscreen replacement and they have ADAS technology, they need to have a calibration to keep it working safely. If a radar sensor is incorrectly calibrated, for example two degrees away from being in its correct position, this can equate to a difference of 8.7 metres on the road.”
These type of sensors are used in autonomous emergency braking and adaptive cruise control, and are normally set behind the front badge or grille, MacBeth said.
“If a vehicle has incorrectly calibrated ADAS, they may not work as they should and could put people at risk. Any decision by the Department for Transport to include ADAS checks in the MOT would get our full support.”
