Brake pads of the future

The use of copper in brake pads will be banned in 2025 but is ahead of the game with its Eco-friction product range which will be used on the Mercedes-Benz C-Class this year. The brand won the Golden Trophy for automotive innovation at the Equip Auto show in Paris last Autumn. “Traditionally copper has been a key ingredient in brake pad formulations and helps to provide the main performance characteristics,” said Jonathan Allen, Regional Marketing Manager. “The metal makes up to 20 percent of the friction material mass in typical formulations. So removing the material from the formulation has been a significant engineering challenge. Our Eco-friction pads will be introduced to the aftermarket progressively to allow vehicles equipped with this latest innovation to be serviced.”
