Brembo buys suspension firm Öhlins in £310m deal

Brakes manufacturing giant Brembo has acquired Sweden-based suspension tech company Öhlins in a $405 million (£310m) deal.

Brembo said the takeover of Öhlins Racing, announced on October 11, is the biggest in its history and was included in an agreement with Tenneco — a portfolio company of funds managed by affiliates of Apollo Global Management.

Sweden-based Öhlins produces a range of products including shock absorbers, front forks, steering dampers and accessories for the OEM and aftermarket sectors.

The company also has a strong racing heritage and presence in major motorsport championships.

Brembo executive chairman Matteo Tiraboschi (pictured) said the deal paved the way for an expansion of business in the auto market.

“It is a world-renowned brand, with a solid business and an unrivalled reputation, both on the racetrack and the road.”

The acquisition, which is expected to be finalised early in the new year, continues Brembo’s investment in motorcycling and motor racing.

In 2021, the group acquired SBS Friction in Denmark and J. Juan in Spain. Earlier this year, Brembo said it was entering the southeast Asian market with a new Thailand production site dedicated to braking systems for motorcycle manufacturers.

Brembo also controls Marchesini, the leading brand in the design and production of light alloy wheels for racing and road motorcycles.
