Comline’s workshop insight: Timing chain replacement on 2020 Land Rover Defender Ingenium diesel

A recent timing chain replacement on a 2020 Land Rover Defender with the new-generation 2.0-litre Ingenium diesel engine, featured on the Car Edition YouTube channel, has highlighted both wear patterns observed in some workshop cases and the increasing complexity of modern engine repair procedures.

During inspection, technicians identified noticeable upper timing chain slack and wear – on a vehicle that had just over 67,000 miles on the clock. While not universal across all vehicles, some independent workshops have reported similar cases in certain Ingenium-powered models, where maintenance history, oil quality and operating conditions are influencing factors in component lifespan.

 

Increasing repair complexity

During the repair, technicians reported the Defender’s modern layout contributed to increased labour time. Tight engine packaging, emissions equipment, revised mounting points and drivetrain integration all required extended disassembly to access the timing system.

These design changes can make timing chain work more labour-intensive depending on model configuration.

Engine condition and secondary findings

Despite visible timing chain wear, internally, the engine was reported to be relatively clean, indicating effective lubrication and servicing.

However, during strip-down, technicians identified a coolant leak from a plastic EGR-related union – an issue that emphasises the value and importance of a full system inspection whenever major engine components are removed.
