Go-ahead for SERMI in UK ‘just the start’, says IGA

SERMI is set for introduction in the UK, with the Independent Garage Association’s announcement that it has secured full approval for the European SERMI scheme nationwide.
The UK is the only country outside the EU to obtain approval, the IGA said. For garages, SERMI is not only about access, it also demonstrates integrity, professionalism and provides a clear competitive and marketing advantage.
The approval concludes a 17-year programme of work to give the UK access to the SERMI framework, which governs secure access to sensitive vehicle security-related repair and maintenance information.
As vehicle technology has advanced, independent garages have faced growing restrictions when accessing the data required to repair modern vehicles.
SERMI establishes a formal, trusted and secure pathway, ensuring legitimate independent businesses can continue to operate on a level playing field, the IGA said.
‘Trusted route’
Stuart James, chief executive officer of the IGA, said: “The scale of this achievement cannot be underestimated. Independent garages have long faced barriers accessing vital security-related vehicle information, and SERMI now provides a recognised, trusted route to that access.
“This is just the beginning. The IGA is continuing its work on additional projects which open the door to secure gateway and cyber security access, positioning the UK to lead the way in repairing the next generation of technically advanced vehicles.”
