The voice of the independent garage sector

Independent garages continue to make inroads in EV servicing, but lag behind franchised workshops

Data from the BookMyGarage platform has revealed that retail bookings for fully electric vehicles (EVs) have more than doubled in 2025, with the share of EV bookings increasing further in the first quarter of 2026.

However, the growth is slower than the previous year, where 2024 data showed an increase over 2023 of 136%. And yet, as a proportion of total bookings on the platform, the EV category has grown steadily – from 0.4% in 2022, to 1.9% in 2025

In the first quarter of 2026, the proportion of EV bookings was even higher, making up 2.95% of the total on the platform.

In 2025, the independent sector took nine out of ten of the EV bookings made via BookMyGarage.

Chief operating officer Toby Hughes said: “We see this as a positive endorsement of EV ownership, especially in the used market where we would typically expect our bookings to be sourced, as well as proof that EV servicing demand is out there.

“We are confident that the EV aftersales market will continue to make inroads on our platform as motorists explore different methods of meeting their ownership requirements and as the used market develops.”

With the conflict in Iran, and its effect on fuel prices driving an increase in interest in EV ownership, both as new vehicles and in the used market, demand for EV aftersales provision is expected to continue its sharp growth. When surveyed last year, more than half (56%) of BookMyGarage independent partners who responded said they employed an EV-qualified technician, and 14% planned to do so this year. While more than a third (36%), of those who had the ability to meet EV requirements reported an increase in demand in 2025.

Across the board, just under 2 in 5 (41.9%) live independent garages currently have electric vehicle bookings enabled on at least one of their active price lists on the platform. When franchised workshops are incorporated, EV enabled outlets make up just over half (51.49%) of all businesses on the platform.

Toby added: “Franchised workshops are in the minority on our platform, but the figures show the network is pulling the overall percentage up, with a likely higher rate of EV enablement than Independents. So, whilst the independent sector is embracing EVs, when considering our trend for increased EV bookings, there is more business to be had for the franchised network too.”
