Motul NGEN Core tech drives sustainability in lubricants

MOTUL is using NGEN Core technology to put sustainability at the heart of its future lubricants business.

Two years ago, Motul introduced NGEN into the market — a range which brought the most sustainable lubricants to the automotive sector, re-using high grade motor oil and its packaging in its products, while ensuring no drop-off of performance over conventionally sourced products.

The technology, which covers all products that use re-refined base oils (RRBO), has been given the name NGEN Core and Motul’s aim is to have its entire range of lubricants offering the user both optimum performance and sustainability in one package.

Such is the importance of this breakthrough that, moving forward, Motul has decided to bring it into its entire product range.

As the first company to bring Multigrade Oils to the market and, even more significantly, both semi-synthetic and fully synthetic motor oils, Motul has long been the leading force in bringing innovation into the automotive lubricant sector.

No compromise

These advances have single-handedly shaped the vehicle lubricants markets for the last 75 years. Now, Motul’s NGEN Core technology allows motorists, motorcyclists and commercial vehicle drivers to be on the roads with no compromise on performance while at the same time making notably less impact on the environment — the re-refined base oils (RRBO) products reduce carbon emissions by 40% compared to virgin base oils.

The oils used in NGEN Core formulations are derived from premium used oils, re-refined through processes such as hydrotreatment and vacuum distillation. Re-refining oil is a complex multi-stage process, with some ten stages and, as quickly becomes obvious, the end product is certainly not simply “recycled oil”.

“We wanted to dispel the myth that re-using oil will somehow produce an inferior product  and our NGEN Core technology is a million miles away from some people’s perception of recycled oil,” explains Andy Wait, head of Motul’s UK and Ireland business.

“The processes and technology we use ensures purity and performance that are at least equal to — and indeed, in some respects, greater than — those of virgin base oils. We are immensely proud to have pioneered this new development in automotive lubrication.”

Important milestone

Beyond the formulation itself, NGEN Core packaging incorporates 50% recycled plastic (PCR) bottles, and Motul intends to increase this percentage to as much as 75% PCR by 2027.

Motul will start selling the new NGEN Core products early in 2026 — leading with some of its motorcycle ranges — the 5000, 6000 and 7100 before introducing its first NGEN Core PCMO products a little later in the year.

NGEN Core, however, is not simply another piece of trailblazing by the company, it is an important milestone on Motul’s strategic roadmap.

Look out for NGEN Core and the next generation lubricant products from Motul, across its entire portfolio, in the coming months.
