National R1234yf is going even greener

R1234yf is the much more environmentally friendly automotive air-conditioning gas.

As you may have seen in our recent adverts in Aftermarket or CAT magazine, or visiting our stand at this year’s Automechanika, traditionally R1234yf has been sold in 5kg cylinders vs 12kg R134a cylinders. This was due to the very high price of R1234yf entering the market and having little demand, making the 5kg more affordable.

R1234yf is now found in more than 20 million cars in the UK with aftermarket demand significantly increased.

More garages are now requesting a larger fill cylinder as the 5kg means they are buying and storing more cylinders when compared to the R134a cylinders.

Purchasing the 10kg fills helps with cash flow as you only pay one deposit for 10kg of gas rather than two.

  • CO2 emissions are reduced not only in production but also in transport.
  • 50% reduction in storage space for the same amount of gas.
  • 50% reduction in deposit outlay.
  • 50% downtime reduction in swapping out cylinders.

Most of the automotive aftermarket air-conditioning re-gas centres hold at least 2-4 cylinders of each refrigerant and using the 10kg cylinder means you reduce the amount of cash you have tied up in cylinder deposits.

Feedback from some consumers has the perception that a 10kg cylinder of R1234yf is too expensive when in reality a 10kg cylinder is now less expensive than a 5kg cylinder was when R1234yf first appeared in new cars.

With summer heatwaves seemingly becoming more a part of the norm, cars owners are placing much more importance on ensuring their cars air conditioning system is working correctly.

In 2027, the quota available for purchasing R134a will reduce significantly meaning there simply will not be enough R134a to support the automotive aftermarket demand. Consumers will need to look at alternatives if they want to keep their A/C systems running which in turn will lead to further increased demand for R1234yf.
