New immobiliser tool supports safe working on EVs

Laser Tools is focusing on workshop safety with the launch of its new EVIP 2 immobiliser tool.
The Laser EVIP 2 has been designed to immobilise an electric vehicle by plugging directly into the Type 2 charge socket and tricking the vehicle into thinking it is waiting for a charge.

Once connected the car cannot be driven, even with the ignition on, making it ideal for workshops working on systems that require the ignition to be on.
Suitable for a wide range of vehicles fitted with a Type 2 charge port, the EVIP 2 will also enable roadside recovery and emergency services to immobilise an accident-damaged or stranded vehicle.
Mark Softley, Laser Tools Technical Director, said: “Since launching the Laser EVIP 2, it’s been very well received in the aftermarket.
“As the Laser EVIP 2 effectively locks the vehicle drive train by utilising the EV charging protocol to prevent the vehicle from driving while plugged in, it has a vital role to play in helping to improve safety for those working on EVs.
“In order to showcase those safety benefits, we have taken the Laser EVIP 2 out on the road to selected independent garages to demonstrate it in a live workshop environment. The mechanics and technicians have really liked it, as it’s a simple and effective way to help boost workshop safety.”
The Auto Workshop and Autocentres, based in Aston, Birmingham and an EV specialist, were one of the independent garages to see the Laser EVIP 2 live in action.
Commenting on the new device, Steve Todd, Director at The Auto Workshop and Autocentres, said: “Everyone was really impressed by it.
“One issue we have had is EVs dropping into gear when they are being worked on. The Laser EVIP 2 helps prevent that by disabling the car and stopping it from moving forward, so it was good to see it in the vehicle bay doing exactly that.
“I think it’s going to make a positive contribution to the safety protocols we have in place here and is a really useful addition to everyone’s toolbox.”
