Old and new technologies working together

Turbochargers play a significant role in downsized engines which need to also provide great fuel economy and performance while meeting stricter emission regulations. ‘Chargers with variable geometry were developed to optimise the turbo for both low and high-engine speeds, to reduce traditional turbo lag to improve engine efficiency, fuel economy and drivability. Many manufacturers and distributors have a new-only policy when replacing failed variable geometry turbochargers due to the specialist nature of the repair. Delphi has 40 years’ remanufacturing experience under its belt and all replaced parts on its reman ‘chargers undergo rigorous tests to OE specifications. 150 new turbochargers will join the programme this year to cover 75% of European applications, both diesel and petrol. A practical training course is available, detailing its operation, surrounding system components and best practices for diagnosing and identifying failures, such as boost pressure and oil damage, as well as correct maintenance and installation techniques. Diagnostic support on its DS series of tools will help pinpoint where in the intake or exhaust circuit a fault has occurred as a turbocharger fault code may be caused by a faulty air flow meter, EGR valve or air leak.
