ZEV consultation ‘valuable chance’ to steer EV transition

The launch of a government consultation on proposals to support the UK’s transition to zero-emission vehicles has been welcomed by the National Franchised Dealers Association.
The two-part consultation focuses on assessing the phase-out date plus “flexibilities” and potential updates to the ZEV mandate, said NFDA chief executive Sue Robinson.
Ministers launched the consultation on December 24, asking industry views on restoring the 2030 phase-out date for new petrol and diesel cars and on ensuring a successful transition to zero emission vehicles.
Part one of the consultation concerns phasing out sales of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030 and supporting the zero emission transition. It will be conducted solely by the UK government and seeks views on options including ending the sale of new cars with internal combustion engines from 2030.
‘Positive step’
The second part of the consultation, concerning the ZEV mandate itself, will be conducted by the UK, Scottish and Welsh governments and Northern Ireland’s Department for Infrastructure. It will seek views on existing flexibilities within the ZEV mandate, consideration of further flexibilities and other technical updates to ensure the ZEV mandate’s efficiency.
Robinson said NFDA remains committed to the UK’s transition to EVs. Earlier this month, the NFDA wrote to business secretary Jonathan Reynolds proposing recommendations including increased flexibility in extending the Vehicle Emissions Trading Scheme beyond 2026.
“While this consultation is a positive step, it is vital for the government to recognise that consumer demand is essential to effectively stimulate the market,” Robinson said.
“As we approach the new year, this consultation offers a valuable opportunity for the sector to help shape the transition to EVs.”
The consultation will close on February 18. 2025.
